There are in excess of over three thousand species of louse, which can be divided into two suborders (Anoplura: sucking lice and Mallophaga:  chewing/biting lice). Humans are mainly affected by the body louse, head louse and pubic louse. However, our animals and pets can also suffer from lice infestations and if treatment isn't swift, infestations can occur. Lice are tiny parasitic insects that are unable to hop, skip, jump or fly, so they crawl around on 6 legs (3 pairs) in search of a meal. For those of us that have had exposure to lice, it is common knowledge that treating and killing lice is an arduous task, certainly if they have been left to multiply. Learning what kills lice and preventing them from spreading to others is extremely important and should be exercised as soon as possible.

There are several ways of eradicating lice and the methods you choose will be determined by the severity of the problem. If your animals or pets have lice that need treating you should be using animal-specific products (i.e. dog products shouldn't be used on cats and vice versa). If your family are suffering from human louse infections (Pediculosis), it may help to determine the species and the best methods of terminating them, quickly. Our website has many informative articles that may be helpful so please visit our Index for links to an array of lice-specific pages. Killing lice may be hard work and uncomfortable but it is worth persevering and preventing them returning.

Begin by establishing the source of the problem and checking everyone that may have been exposed to the lice. Its important to find all the areas that are infected and all the people, as all parasites must be treated at once/at the same time. Once you have determined where the lice are, you can decide which treatment is needed. There are lotions, shampoos, sprays, insecticides, powders, combs, creams and home-made remedies all designed to help you eradicate an infestation. Your doctor may be able to issue you with a prescription, you could opt to buy over-the-counter products from your pharmacy or drug store (or on-line), or alternatively you could choose to make your own lice killing concoction at home out of every day ingredients.

It is possible for lice to become immune to particular insecticides over time, therefore you may decide to opt for natural remedies first. To be certain you are eradicating all lice, you may need to use several applications spread over a fortnight, as many products are only designed to kill adult lice and not their nits/eggs. As eggs could take up to ten days to hatch, a secondary application should be applied 12-14 days after the first. Other techniques include drowning them, squashing them, picking them, 'smothering' them or spraying them. Whichever you choose, always exercise caution when applying lice remedies or treatments on infants, young children or those who are pregnant/breast-feeding.

People believe that the best technique for dealing with lice is prevention/avoidance, rather than waiting for an infestation to appear before looking at ways of eradicating them. To prevent lice you must understand what they are, how they feed, how they multiply, how they are caught and what simple steps you can take to avoid them. There are links on our Index page that will help you with this and also offer ideas for treatments, remedies, detection, removal and control. Adverts may also offer products that will help with you kill lice!
