Differ per person
There are many symptoms of head lice and not all of us suffer from the same ones. Some may not suffer from any symptoms at all and still have head lice - it is therefore important to be regularly checked throughout the year, should you be exposed (children/teachers). Symptoms of head lice may differ for lots of reasons, but there are general signs and symptoms which will allow you or your child to act, should they occur. If you have any symptoms of head lice then you'll need to have your hair checked as soon as possible. There are tools, such as detection combs, magnified glasses and torches that may help with this process - but it is important to conduct a thorough search, spending at least 15-20 minutes per person. For more information on this, take a look at our best lice treatments page.

Is It 'all in your head?'
Many of us will feel like we have head lice if we know of somebody or a group of people who are infected. This is more psychological than anything else - a lice phobia! If you are surrounded by people who are itching themselves and talking about head lice, it isn't unusual to start feeling itchy symptoms as well, only to convince yourself you are also infected. To clear up any doubt in your mind, you should be checked for head lice by a competent person. Not all symptoms are visible and the symptoms of actual head lice will differ depending on the severity of the infestation and the person.

Tickling & itching
General symptoms of head lice may include a tickly sensation on the scalp, as if something tiny is moving in the hair. This is because head lice cannot jump or fly and instead walk through the hairs on their six legs. There may also be some itching symptoms in certain spots across the scalp - perhaps behind the ears and around the neck area (but itchiness may take months to develop). Itchiness is not always caused by the head lice bites, but in more severe cases it's rather the allergic reaction to the saliva. If bites such as these are scratched, there is a possibility of further symptoms / infection and even more discomfort. When scratching becomes severe, sores may develop. Should this happen, consult your doctor for advice on the relevant treatment.

Dandruff-like specs
Other symptoms of head lice could be the appearance of small white and yellow specs, similar to dandruff. These could well be dandruff or other skin complaints such as eczema or dermatitis. However, for confirmation a closer inspection of these symptoms should take place as these specs could be 'nits' or empty casings left by hatched nymphs. These are generally found near the base of the hair shaft, close to the scalp - and can be live eggs, hatched eggs or dead eggs. You will find that an every day dandruff shampoo will clear the hair of dandruff, but the 'nits' are attached so strongly to the hair with a glue-like saliva, that lice products will be needed to get them out.

Rashes, red bumps & broken skin
Symptoms of head lice may include a rash for some people. Rashes may appear due to an allergic reaction to excrement left by the lice and these are sometimes visible around the neck line. Small red bumps may also appear where bites have taken place and broken skin could develop too. However, the clearest of symptoms is to see head lice moving. If this happens then you can be certain you have head lice and need to be treated straight away. Do not share brushes, combs, hats or scarves and do not have close head to head contact with others until at least one application of treatment has taken place. If any symptoms are confirmed as active lice, you have the choice of treating them yourself (perhaps with a home remedy), buying over the counter products, or seeking professional advice and a prescribed medicated treatment from your local GP.
