Removing Lice
Many people are searching for information on removing lice and not everyone is looking for information on head lice, which is probably the most common problem amongst families (certainly those with young children aged 3-12 years old who attend nursery or school). There are lots of different products, treatments and remedies for removing lice which can be bought on-line, over the counter at your local pharmacy or drug store or prescribed by your doctor/GP. In addition to removing head, body and pubic lice, removing lice from our pets and our homes are also very important to us and key to completely eradicating infestations of lice should they make it into our houses. Visit our homepage for lots of relevant links to other pages in our site about specific types of lice and prevention methods.

Products for Removing Lice
The good news is that our ancestors have been removing lice for centuries as they have been around a very long time. We also now have so many developments and improvements in products, that they should not cause us too much of a problem. There are certain products though that may not be as successful as others, and it is always worth asking friends, family and forums if they know of local products that are proven to work. This could save a lot of time, money and effort as well as weeks of unnecessary discomfort at home. As some strains of lice become immune to certain chemicals through years of exposure, it may be best to start with natural products to help with their removal. If these are unsuccessful then you could turn to strong insecticides. The not so good news is that not everybody suffers from symptoms and signs when they have lice, so unless people learn to look out for the signs, they can go undetected for weeks making outbreaks in communities highly likely.

Removing Head Lice
For removing lice from the head, it is definitely worth buying a metal detection comb (also know as nit/lice combs). The metal variety are meant to be more effective than plastic versions and these will help draw lice out of the hair - as well as dragging eggs/nits out along the way. When removing any type of lice, you have to target the eggs, nymphs and adults otherwise the life cycle will just continue and the parasites will come back. There are a whole host of treatments and remedies to help with removing lice, and these come in the form of shampoos, lotions, creams, liquids and sprays. There are ones you can buy which contain insecticides (strong chemicals) and others that use natural ingredients. Otherwise you can try some homemade remedies, such as mayonnaise, olive oil or Vaseline. Which ever product you use, follow the instructions carefully and be aware of the ingredients in case there is any sort of allergic reaction. Once applied, you should use your comb to draw lice, eggs and nits out. The old-school way of removing nits would have been to pick them out with fingers or tweezers - so although this may take a lot longer it could also work (with a lot of perseverance).

Removing Lice from Hair
Removing body and pubic lice will be different from head lice. Body lice lay their eggs in clothing and fabrics and not solely on hair shafts close to the skin so you need to target clothing, bedding and laundry as well as the body. Get treatments for any bites or lice found in hairy areas on the body and at the same time thoroughly wash and dry all clothing, bedding and laundry on a high temperature. Removing body lice is something that soldiers in WWI had to deal with in the trenches, as there were strains of body lice and millions living in close body to body environments. Avoid sharing clothes with other people until you are certain the lice are gone. For removing pubic lice, a detection comb may not be necessary or help but treatments commonly come in the form of an insecticide, designed specifically for use on the human body. There are water-based or alcohol-based insecticides which have different strengths depending on the severity of the problem and these are available in lotions, creams and liquids. Removing body lice is very important, and reducing the risk of spreading it to others equally so.

Removing lice from home
Removing lice from our pets and our home should also be acted on as soon as possible. The lice that infest our pets (such as cats and dogs) are different to the species that infest the human body, but they will still need removing because they cause our loved ones to become irritable, uncomfortable and at risk of further infection. For help removing lice you could visit your local veterinarian and ask what they would advise is best - but remember that when treating your pets, you should be treating the home at the same time to avoid any re-infestation. Vacuuming, cleaning and washing should be undertaken throughout to eliminate any lice lurking in small cracks or on fabrics, bedding, towels, etc. If you have book lice or other types in the home, pest control will help with removing them, otherwise you may wish to look at foggers, powders or sprays. Always be careful with chemicals though - ensure pets and family are vacated for the necessary period of time.
