Prevention of Lice
Nothing can guarantee that you will not catch lice; however there are some simple steps and methods you could use in every day life to give yourself the best chance of preventing them. Although this website offers a wealth of information on detection, removal, treatments and remedies - learning about preventing lice is far more valuable. If you can steer clear of lice infestations, the need for post-lice actions won't be necessary. Educating ourselves on lice is very important as they can cause our families (certainly our children) stress, upset and humiliation, as well as discomfort, irritability, time and money.

Lice Prevention
The most common form of lice for people that need preventing is head lice/nits (Pediculus humanus capitis). It is with children between the ages of 3 and 12 years old that this type of louse is most prevalent, and this may be mainly due to their daily environment and continued close head to head contact. However, it may also be a lot to do with general habits and ignorance and naivety about lice. Not being aware of the risks of nits, how they are caught and spread, and how difficult they can sometimes be to get rid of, will give the majority of people a lackadaisical approach to preventing the parasites. If you or your children have suffered from nits before, you'll be well aware that preventing an infestation is of the utmost importance.

Preventing Lice
Lice do not have wings or the ability to jump and hop, so they must crawl from one place to another on their (six) legs. You will therefore not have lice landing on you, unless they walk of crawl. They do not discriminate between hosts either! They do not care if your hair is clean or dirty, so having head lice is by no means a reflection of poor hygiene or lack of cleanliness. Having clean hair is not a way of preventing them, but it may help as you'll spot them earlier. Head lice survive by living on and feeding off of our scalps. They bite the skin, draw blood, mate and multiply and if left to do so, infestations can occur. Learn about what they look like by visiting our picture pages.

Preventing Lice - Avoidance actions
Head lice are found mainly on the scalp and in the hair, but also in and on a number of accessories such as hats, helmets, coat hoods, ear phones, scarves, ribbons, hair brushes, combs, pillows, towels, bedding and sleeping bags (amongst many more). It is therefore vital that we teach our children to avoid the sharing of such items and encourage them to not put their heads together on school buses, in classrooms, at play time or during after school clubs. Jackets and coats should be kept separated and hung on individual hooks or placed in lockers and not thrown in a pile on the floor. If children need encouragement with preventing lice, show them some of the pictures we have! We should be regularly cleaning head rests, kits, costumes and anything else that could transmit lice from one person to another, as a way of preventing them.

Preventing Lice
Hair should be washed regularly and weekly checks for lice performed. Buy a metal detection comb to help. As many people do not show signs or symptoms, the best actions for preventing an outbreak is to remember to check for them. However, it is also important to be aware of (and look out for) the signs, such as head scratching, itching, red bumps or sores. These may show up around the ears or at the back of the neck. Repellents cannot guarantee head lice will not be caught, so don't solely rely on them - but tea tree and coconut oil may put them off. Instead, share the knowledge and help children help themselves by learning the necessary techniques of preventing lice.
