Natural Head Lice Remedies - Alternatives to insecticides
There are many natural remedies for head lice that can be made at home or bought over the counter at health stores, drug stores and pharmacies. Natural remedies are often chosen by people as an alternative to treatments that contain strong insecticides (alcohol and water based). How effective some of the natural remedies are will depend on the individual and the severity of the infestation. Although natural remedies that you can purchase and make contain 'natural' ingredients it doesn't mean that it is suitable for everyone. Many can suffer from allergic reactions (such as asthma or skin irritation) and some natural remedies may not be suitable for young children or pregnant/breast feeding women. If you are unsure or do suffer illness from any of the natural remedies, consult a doctor.

Natural Remedies Head Lice - Preparation with combs
The tools used to confirm head lice infestations can also be used to help remove them (bug busting or wet combing). A detection comb, magnified glass, torch, tweezers, some protective gloves, a bowl of hot soapy water and towels can all be used in addition to whichever of the natural remedies you choose. If you only have these things to hand, then you could try to remove the lice with your fingers/tweezers and not try any other treatment or remedy, but it may take you a long time, and have to be regularly repeated. Some head lice infestations are simply too severe and will require alternative natural remedies. With any of the natural remedies, it's a good idea to give the hair a good wash with ordinary shampoo before you start. Kill and dispose of any lice that come out and remember to wash all tools and towels used at the end of the application.

Head Lice Natural Remedies - Oil based
Natural remedies that you may be able to make yourself at home could include a number of oil based products. Olive oil, vegetable oil, baby oil, Vaseline and mayonnaise can all be used to 'smother' the scalp, suffocating the head lice over a number of hours. You will find it easier if you have help, but the idea is to use one of these natural remedies to cover the whole scalp (the thicker the better) and then to seal it in by wearing a shower cap or plastic head wrap. Some suggest leaving it on the head lice overnight and then washing it out in the morning, but it may be safer and cleaner to do it during the day. The idea is to leave these 'smothering' head lice natural remedies for a good number of hours so that the lice and eggs are suffocated and dislodged. You will then need to thoroughly wash and comb the hair afterwards (and repeat if necessary). You can also try this natural head lice technique with shaving foam and antiseptic mouthwash.
