Louse Definition - Ectoparasite
There are over 3000 species of lice worldwide and these fall under the scientific classification Order, Phthiraptera. These are further divided in to two sub-orders, Anoplura (the sucking louse) and Mallophaga (the chewing louse). The louse is a wingless parasitic insect that feeds on the skin, debris, blood and sebaceous secretions of another host. The louse has no wings, six legs and cannot hop or jump (like a flea). It is tiny in size (1-3mm), has a flat appearance and ranges in colour depending on age and if it has fed. The louse can be a whitish grey or a reddish brown (usually after a blood meal) and can affect many different types of birds and mammals.

Louse Definition - Those that affect humans
There are three types of lice that commonly affect humans and they are Pediculus humanus capitis (head lice), Pediculus humanus corporis (body lice) and Phthirus pubis (pubic lice). Our pets also can be affected by other types of louse and there are multiple links to really interesting and helpful information via our Homepage - please take a look! The louse is usually passed to new people/pets without their knowledge. As the louse cannot 'land' on a new host, it is typically transported via close body to body contact (crawls or drops on) with an infected being or via the sharing of infected objects (such as hair brushes, hats, scarves, bedding, clothing, laundry, etc).

Louse Definition - Life cycle
The life cycle of a louse has three stages: egg, nymph and adult. Eggs are most commonly laid and stuck to the base of hair shafts (for those lice that affect humans) where they are protected and warm. The louse egg is usually whitish yellow in colour and can be mistaken for dandruff or flaky skin. These eggs will hatch into nymphs after a week or so. The louse nymph is born as a miniature version of an adult louse (no wings, six legs, etc), but must go through three moults before becoming an adult. This usually takes a further ten days, and once completed the adult lice will feed, mate and the lifecycle begins again.

Louse Definition - Symptoms & illness
There are various sign and symptoms of a louse infestation and some people react differently to others (usually depending on how allergic they are to their saliva) - some will experience no itching and others will have severe itching. The presence of lice can sometimes be detected by seeing red spots/bite marks, dark markings on the skin from blood or lice excrement, a blue skin discoloration and small dark specs on clothes and bedding. Those who may have a head lice infestation may feel a tingling sensation as the louse moves around on the scalp. Generally these types of lice do not cause any further illness if dealt with promptly, however the body louse is capable of carrying a number of diseases.
