If you have found lice on your body, it could be one of three species that live and feed on humans - Pediculus humanus corporis (body louse), Phthirus pubis (pubic louse) or Pediculus humanus capitis (head louse). These types of lice feed off our body by biting our skin and sucking blood (ectoparasites). The saliva that is injected into the bites is the main cause of infection, irritation and the spread of disease. They differ when it comes to laying eggs though as head and pubic lice lay nits/eggs on our body which are attached to the base of hair shafts and body lice lay their eggs in the seams of our clothes. For further information on specific types of lice (body, pubic, head) navigate to our homepage where you'll find the relevant links.

Define: Body Lice
Lice found on our body are generally small (1-3 mm) and wingless, cannot jump or fly, have six legs and crawl from one host to another if given the opportunity. They range in colour from a translucent grey to a reddish brown, and their presence can cause mild to severe itching, red lesions, blue Macules, rashes, skin infections (from scratching), conjunctivitis and some diseases. If you have pubic or head lice on your body then the good news is they are unlikely to cause further illness and can be treated with a medicated lice product. The not so good news is that you'll need to seek and apply treatment to get rid of them.

Human Body Lice Body
Lice on our body are usually contracted in one of two ways - by close body to body contact or the sharing of clothes/bedding with an infected person. However, it is only the body louse that is able to transmit 3 types of bacteria that cause the following diseases in humans: Rickettsia prowazekii (agent of epidemic typhus), Borrelia recurrentis (agent of relapsing fever) and Bartonella Quintana (agent of trench fever). Lice do not only infect the body of those with poor hygiene, however people who live in small and overcrowded surroundings, poor sanitation and without access to regular clean clothing are primarily affected (such as the homeless). Over a million soldiers were affected by trench fever in WWI due to the poor conditions.

Treatment for Body Lice
Whichever lice you have on your body, it is imperative that you have them treated and removed as soon as possible. Whilst doing so, you should avoid close body to body contact so that the lice cannot be spread to others. There are plenty of over the counter products such as lotions, creams, sprays and shampoos that will help get rid of lice on your body (available at the Drug store or Pharmacy). Some may even choose to make and use home remedies - however if the lice are persistent and not clearing, you should visit your doctor, GP or local GUM clinic for a prescription. If you have caught pubic lice it is also sensible to be checked out for other potential STDs.

There are no products that can guarantee preventing lice (such as repellents) however; there are steps you can take to give yourself the best chance of avoiding them. Ensuring everyone is treated at the same time should lower the chances of re-infestation and stop the spread of body lice. Steer clear of sharing brushes, combs, hats, clothing and bedding with those who may be infected. Stay away from those with pubic lice until they have treated their body. Keeping a good level of hygiene (washing twice a day), wearing clean clothes and regularly changing and washing bedding, towels and other laundry may also help. Please visit our other pages for more information on lice and the effects they have on us.
