Killing Lice Nits

There are over 3000 different species of louse, which are split into two suborders (Anoplura, the sucking lice and Mallophaga, the chewing/biting lice). The most common types of lice that affect humans are the body louse, head louse and pubic louse. However, our pets and animals can all be infested with lice and if left untreated, infestations can occur. Lice are small parasitic insects that cannot fly, jump or hop, so they move around on their six legs looking for a meal. For those of you who have had exposure to lice you will know that it can be a hard task killing them if they have been allowed to multiply out of control. Killing lice and preventing them spreading to others is very important and should be exercised at the earliest opportunity.

Lice Killing Products
There are many ways of killing lice and the treatments you choose will be in line with the severity of the problem. If your pets have lice that require killing you should be targeting them with animal-specific products (i.e. cat products shouldn't be used on dogs or vice versa). If you or your children are suffering from human louse infections (Pediculosis), you will need to determine which species they are and the best techniques for killing them, fast. Killing lice may take some perseverance but it is definitely worth it in the long run.

Try to establish the source of the problem and check everyone that has or may have had exposure to the lice. It is important to determine all areas that are infected and all people, as killing the lice should be done in synch. Once you know where the parasites are, you can choose your treatment and begin killing them. There are lice killing shampoos, lotions, sprays, powders, insecticides, creams, combs and homemade remedies all designed to assist you with killing lice. You can visit the doctor for a prescription, buy over the counter products from your local drug store or pharmacy (or on-line), or you can choose to make your own concoction at home.

Lice Killing Home Remedies
Lice can become immune to certain insecticides over time, so it may be more sensible to begin with natural remedies first. To ensure you are killing all lice, you may have to use several applications spread over a two week period, as a lot of products are only capable of killing adults and not their eggs. As eggs may take approximately 7-10 days to hatch, a second application should be used around 12-14 days later. Techniques for killing lice may include, 'smothering' them, drowning them, picking them, squashing them or spraying them. However, always exercise caution when using treatments or remedies on young children or pregnant and breast-feeding women.
