How to Prevent Lice - Simple steps
The best way to prevent lice is to learn what they are, how they can be caught (i.e. how they move from one person to another) and for extra encouragement, what diseases they can carry and how difficult they can be to treat. Once you have this information, it is likely that you'll be more determined to avoid them, as well as appreciate the importance of stopping any further spread should you inadvertently catch them. Nothing can guarantee you 100% that you will not catch lice (even repellents) but by taking simple measures you can help prevent them. A regular routine check-up may help prevent an infestation from occurring, as you'll give yourself a better chance if lice are caught and treated early on. Ways to Prevent Lice - Learn how they move
Lice are small parasitic insects that affect humans and our pets. They range in size but rarely grow much above 3 mm in length. Lice have no wings and are unable to jump or hop, but they can crawl through hair and across skin on six legs (each with claws for gripping hair shafts). Head lice will therefore not be able to 'land' on you; instead they'll need to crawl either by direct body to body contact or on infected accessories or clothes. There are 3 types of lice that commonly affect humans and they are the head, body and pubic louse. Lice bite the skin and feed on blood to survive and do not care of your hair is clean or dirty (that's a myth). Their saliva and excrement can cause allergic reactions on certain skin, which results in itchiness and irritability.

How do you Prevent Lice - Learn how they're caught
The more common way for head lice to move from one person to another is via bodily contact. Head to head contact with friends may result in the spread of head lice, but you could also potentially catch them from hair-brushes, combs, hats, ribbons, scarves, pillows, helmets, ear-phones and many other items that may have been exposed to the head area. Body lice can be caught through infected clothing and are most common amongst those who do not have access to regular clean clothing/bedding (such as the homeless). Pubic lice (crabs) can be caught through close body to body contact and not only through sexual intercourse. As crabs can infect facial hair (such as beards, eyelashes, eyebrows and moustaches) as well as hair around the genitals and anus, it is possible to catch them through kissing as well.

How to Prevent Lice - Illness & disease
Although head and pubic lice cause discomfort, irritability and often embarrassment - further serious illness doesn't occur (sores and lesions may develop if persistently scratched). However, body lice are able to transmit three diseases: Epidemic typhus, Relapsing fever and Trench fever (all of which can cause severe illness and be fatal). All types of lice that affect humans should be prevented as soon as possible. There are sprays, shampoos, powders, lotions, creams and combs all formulated to treat lice. Repellents may help prevent infestations but the general feedback is that they aren't that effective. You can purchase natural remedies and also solutions with pesticides in that will help get rid of the lice. Still, it is better to prevent them rather than search for treatments.

How to Prevent Lice
- Everyday techniques
Below are some ways to prevent lice, and if these can be implemented into every day life by you and your children, there's a better chance lice will be avoided. Prevent lice...

  • by not sharing hair brushes, combs, hats, scarves, coat pegs, ear phones, ribbons, pillows, towels, bedding or sleeping bags
  • by not 'putting your heads together' in the playground, on the bus, in the car, in class or at after school clubs
  • by keeping coats/jackets separated in class - do not throw them in a pile on the floor
  • by regularly cleaning head rests, helmets, kits, costumes and any other uniforms that may be shared - if washable, do so on a high temperature
  • by keeping good personal hygiene and regular cleaning of your body and clothes may help you spot any lice before an infestation occurs
  • by performing regular checks on all school children throughout term time and during holidays if they have been to clubs or camps - purchase a good metal detection comb to help
  • by looking out for the signs and symptoms in others (scratching, white dandruff like specs, bite marks/red spots round the neck line and behind the ears, irritability & itching)
