If you are looking for a natural cure for head lice you will be pleased to know that there are many different methods and treatments that one could try. The effectiveness of each head lice natural cure will differ per person and if you know you are allergic to any of the ingredients/contents then do not attempt them. Some of the natural cures for head lice can be attempted at home, made from items you may have in your cupboards, and others can be bought over the counter at local drug stores or pharmacies. Techniques that suffocate, drown and remove head lice are covered below - if you do attempt one and it works, please let us know! Alternatively, if you have a different (and genuine) natural cure that you feel others could benefit from, please also let us know and we'll add it to our content.

Substitute for chemicals
Before searching for any type of treatment, it is worth knowing a bit more about head lice. There are lots of pages on this site that offer relevant and helpful information, so please visit out homepage. Head lice are not a new problem and our ancestors would have had to deal with these parasites for centuries. They would not have had access to chemicals and insecticides, so would have had to use a natural cure such as picking them out with their fingers. This may sound like a painstaking and arduous task, and you're probably right, however if you have time on your hands, a magnified glass, good lighting and record breaking perseverance, you may be able to eliminate head lice with your hands. However, before we get carried away, most of us simply don't have the time and we need tools/treatments to assist us.

Combs
Bug busting or wet combing are both methods that are natural. You will need to buy a lice comb (also know as detection/nit comb) which is a specially designed tool for extracting head lice & eggs/nits out of the hair. These head lice combs have closely packed fine teeth, often with grooves and its best to buy a metal one rather than plastic. Tweezers may also help you pick the head lice out. It is unlikely that you'll be able to locate and remove all head lice and any eggs in one sitting. With most treatments, the process should be repeated around 7-10 after the first. Wash the hair with your ordinary shampoo, damp dry it, brush out any tangles/knots with your normal brush (and either disinfect or throw it away), add a little conditioner or olive oil to the hair (to make it slippery) and then systematically check the whole head using the head lice comb, concentrating on small sections at a time. Start at the scalp and draw the comb the entire length of the hair to the tip (and repeat). Squash or drown any head lice/eggs you may find and dispose of them. Clean the comb between strokes and when you are finished clean/disinfect all towels and utensils you use.

Oils
The natural cure that you may be able to reach into your fridge or cupboard for is the application of thick oil based products. To 'smother' head lice, you could use Olive oil, Mayonnaise or Vaseline. The idea is to suffocate any head lice so they die by covering the scalp and then leaving it for a number of hours. As this natural cure may smell and be slightly messy, cover the hair with a sealed shower cap or head wrap so nothing escapes. You could then sleep with this on overnight and wash out in the morning, or try it during the day; however it should be left on for a good number of hours. Other natural cures include the application of essential oils such as citronella, ginger, rosemary, lavender, chamomile, tea tree, lemongrass, peppermint oil, thyme, pennyroyal, sage and eucalyptus. Caution should be exercised when dealing with any essential oil natural cure as they can cause allergic reactions, both on the skin and respiratory. If you suffer from asthma or skin complaints (eczema/dermatitis) maybe you should seek advice from your doctor first. If any adverse effects occur, stop using the oils and contact a doctor immediately.

Various others
Garlic (capsules or cloves) is also said to be a natural cure for head lice. Many have used it as a supplement in their meals and seen head lice infestations disappear. Others believe a good natural cure for head lice can be ordinary shampoos (that you can buy over the counter). Extra strength dandruff shampoo, tea tree and coconut oil shampoos are all meant to be effective. Other oils that may be a natural cure include vegetable oil and baby oil - both can be massaged into the scalp. Antiseptic mouthwash and shaving foam are also used by some people on the scalp who don't wish to use oils. These both contain ingredients that kill head lice.

Alternative methods
You can also mix different essential oils with every day products for a natural cure. Olive oil can be mixed half and half with white vinegar and poured into an empty spray-bottle, to make a spray for the hair whilst using a detection comb. The vinegar should loosen nits from the hair and the oil will make it easier to draw any head lice or eggs out. The hair should be washed with an ordinary shampoo after use. Another natural cure is to mix your ordinary shampoo with a teaspoon of tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil, and three teaspoons of olive oil. Massage into the scalp and leave for an hour, covered up. Vinegar and baby oil (mixed together) may also make a strong solution which you could apply to the head as a natural cure. Alternatively, mix equal portions of olive, tea tree, almond, and coconut oil with tea-tree shampoo, cover and leave it for an hour before washing it out. Whenever using treatments on children or pregnant/breast-feeding women exercise caution and ensure that the natural cure is appropriate. It may be best to steer clear of essential oils (& any hair dye). Apply your natural cure in a controlled environment away from any flames (as many of the ingredients could be possibly flammable).
