Do Not Scratch Them

If you are experiencing or suffering from body louse bites, they may be from the body louse (Pediculus humanus corporis) or the pubic louse (Phthirus pubis). Neither is pleasant to have on your body and there are many treatments that will help you get rid of them as soon as possible. If the bites are really sore, it is recommended that you do not scratch them. It may be difficult, but there is a chance of further infection if the bites are scratched. To ease the irritability, apply some calamine lotion or other soothing gels until you have determined which type of louse it is and how you intend to treat the problem.

Body Louse Bites On The Body
We have pages dedicated to the pubic louse and body louse, so please visit our homepage for additional information on these subjects. If you can, a visit to the doctor may be the best option to establish which kind of louse it is that's leaving bites on your body. The pubic louse is usually found in areas around the groin, but can also infect areas around the anus, back, chest, underarms and facial hair (eyebrows/lashes, moustaches & beards). The body louse can infest clothing (hides in seams), bedding as well as leave bites all over the body. One of the major differences between the two is that the body louse can transmit a number of diseases, but both types of louse shouldn't cause further illness if dealt with quickly.

Signs & Symptoms
The body louse is a small parasitic insect, ranging from 1-3 mm in length and from grey to brown in color. The body louse has no wings, cannot jump or hop, but does have six legs with claws to help grip to hairs when moving around. The body louse feeds on dead skin, other types of debris and small amounts of blood. Signs of a body louse infestation may include white specs in the hair and on clothing (similar to dandruff/flaky skin), red itchy spots (bites, made itchy by saliva from the louse), small dark markings on the skin (from louse excrement and blood) and blue skin discoloration (where bites have taken place). You may also find small dark marks on your clothing and bedding.

Treatment for body louse bites can be found in the form of lotions, creams, sprays, liquids and shampoos. You may also find a louse comb useful if the infestation is severe and there are many eggs in the hair. If you visit the doctor, they may prescribe you a pediculicide or whichever new medication is most suitable (perhaps Permethrin or Malathion). If you show signs of disease then antibiotics may be necessary. Thoroughly cleaning and washing all infected clothing, towels and bedding on a high temperature is also suggested, and access to regular clean clothes and bedding is key to stopping the bites.

Body Louse Bite Prevention is always better than treatment - something we keep saying throughout this website. Unfortunately for some, clean clothing and bedding isn't readily available and it will be with the homeless and those in the poorest communities around the world that may be regularly affected by the body louse. Receiving treatment for body louse bites and ensuring that others aren't affected is very important. Stopping the spread and helping others avoid the body louse (by not sharing infected clothes, beds & steering clear of people until they have been treated and killed) will help ease our on-going combat with this parasite. Repellents, good hygiene and regularly cleaning may not completely deter the body louse, but they may help.
